After a decade in Chinatown, renowned art gallery 47 Canal is relocating to SoHo. Founded by Margaret Lee and Oliver Newton in 2011, the gallery has been a driving force in the neighborhood’s vibrant art scene. With a reputation for showcasing innovative and avant-garde works, 47 Canal has launched the careers of notable artists like Anicka Yi and Josh Kline.
The gallery’s new home at 59 Wooster Street places it in the heart of SoHo’s burgeoning art district, alongside prominent galleries like Jeffrey Deitch and Hauser & Wirth. While the Lower East Side and Chinatown remain thriving art hubs, 47 Canal’s departure marks a significant shift in the city’s artistic landscape.
The gallery’s inaugural exhibition in SoHo, “Summer with Friends and Family,” curated by G. Peter Jemison, will open on July 3. As 47 Canal begins this new chapter, the art world looks forward to seeing what the future holds for this influential gallery.
