Adidas shook the running shoe world—and soon after, the casual shoe market—with the launch of the UltraBOOST in 2015, aided by a collaboration with then-partner Ye. The squishy, bouncy BOOST foam, first seen on the EnergyBOOST in 2013, became iconic with the UltraBOOST. Known as “expanded thermoplastic polyurethane” (eTPU), this technology involves expanding TPU particles around air pockets, creating a long-lasting cushion designed to maximize a runner’s kinetic output by increasing energy absorption and return.
Adidas UltraBOOST 5: A New Era
Since its debut, the UltraBOOST has become one of adidas’ most recognizable lines. Now, the franchise is stepping into a new era with the launch of the UltraBOOST 5. adidas claims this model is the UltraBOOST’s “biggest redesign” yet, featuring a completely reconstructed build that offers the highest energy return of any UltraBOOST model to date. With new geometries providing more responsiveness in the heel and midfoot, the UltraBOOST 5 delivers 2% more forefoot energy return and 9mm more BOOST than previous models. Thanks to adidas’ LIGHT BOOST technology, this new setup doesn’t add extra weight, maintaining all the standard BOOST benefits while reducing weight.
Technological Advancements in UltraBOOST 5
Other technological advancements include a Primeknit upper that is tighter in high-wear zones and looser in less-stressed areas for enhanced breathability. The shoe also features a modern iteration of adidas’ classic Torsion midfoot support system and a high-grade Continental rubber outsole. The UltraBOOST 5 will debut in a colorway that combines a subtle white and “Glory Grey” upper with an energetic mix of “Spark Orange” and “Lucid Pink” on the midsole.
UltraBOOST 5: The Best Iteration Yet
“The UltraBOOST is a true running icon, and this is our best iteration yet,” said Simon Lockett, adidas’ footwear product marketing category director. “82% of people that have tested it say they prefer its energy return to their own shoes, and 70% said they had more fun while running in it. That’s always been the superpower of UltraBOOST.”
adidas adiClub members can purchase the UltraBOOST 5 now, with a general release set for July 18 on the adidas webstore and at select stockists. The MSRP is $180 USD.
