Jordan Brand has made Mexico City the hub of its LATAM operations with the recent opening of a massive flagship store. Hot on the heels of this opening, they’ve unveiled a special release packed with Mexican pride: the patriotic Air Jordan 5 “El Grito.”
Air Jordan 5 “El Grito”: Celebrating Mexican Heritage
The shoe’s name is inspired by a pivotal moment in Mexican history: the call to action from Father Miguel Hidalgo for Mexico to rise against Spanish rule, marking the start of the Mexican War of Independence. Although @richmd87, who first revealed the shoe, claims it’s not directly inspired by independence, but rather the pride of Mexican diversity through mysticism, culture, and traditions. It’s important to note that neither Nike nor Jordan Brand has confirmed the exact inspiration at the time of writing.
Key Features of the “El Grito” Air Jordan 5
Regardless of the marketing details, the “El Grito” features special elements that enhance its white, green, orange, and maroon color scheme. The full white leather upper is adorned with embossed details inspired by traditional Mexican patterns on the heel, tongue, and mudguard. The midfoot’s netting is leather instead of the usual plastic. Air Force 1-style lace deubres add a final touch, with one reading “Viva” and the other likely “Mexico.”
The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” is set to release on September 7, retailing for $225 USD.
