Alex Katz: Seasons at MoMA – A New Perspective on New York’s Changing Landscapes

New York’s dynamic seasons offer a unique backdrop for its residents, and artist Alex Katz has been capturing this ever-changing environment through his art since the 1950s. Based in SoHo, Katz’s work vividly reflects the diverse experiences of the city’s climate.

At the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Katz presents a new series of four monumental paintings that explore the transition of the seasons. This collection adds to his extensive body of work, which includes over 100 pieces created in his studio since 2022. Katz’s creative process often starts with images captured on his iPhone, which he then sketches and develops into large-scale paintings.

The paintings on display are characterized by abstract, gestural marks rather than literal depictions of trees or landscapes. “It’s about the sensation of seeing,” Katz explains, noting that his works do not have a defined beginning or end. He describes his approach as intuitive, completing each piece in a single morning with a sense of spontaneity: “Hold your breath and hope for the best.” As summer shifts to fall, Seasons will be concluding its run at MoMA on September 8.
