Bolt, the European transport app, has partnered with Stockholm design studio Interesting Times Gang to create a unique furniture collection made from discarded car parts. This modular range, aptly named “Living Vroom,” includes a sofa, lounge chair, pouffe, and matching lamps, designed to provide urban dwellers a cozy retreat in the city streets.
“Living Vroom” Collection by Interesting Times Gang: Repurposing Cars into Urban Furniture
The concept behind the “Living Vroom” collection revolves around repurposing cars into functional urban furniture, reclaiming sacred city space. With half of the urban areas currently dedicated to car infrastructure, the Shared Mobility’s Global Impact report by Oliver Wyman suggests that shared mobility could reduce car usage by 19%, freeing up more city space.
Vision for Urban Space Transformation
Alexander Westerlund, head of design at Interesting Times Gang, shared the vision: “Our cities are often built just to get from A to B fast, but little effort is made to make the environment nice to spend time in. The ‘Living Vroom’ range is doing the opposite: making public space more attractive, and playful, and creating a space to meet strangers and strike up random conversations.”
Innovative Design Inspired by Car Parts
To bring this vision to life, the designers scoured a scrapyard for car parts that could be transformed into design pieces. They found inspiration in nylon airbags, blending them with glass fibers for 3D printing to create durable sofa and lounge chair structures. The airbag material’s soft texture was cut and sewn together to upholster the furniture, while its translucent quality provided the perfect shade for the solar-powered lamps, which emit a bright green glow at night.
The “Living Vroom” collection will debut in Stockholm during the city’s Creative Edition independent design festival.
