A Thinking Room,” unveiled at the prestigious Salone del Mobile design fair
David Lynch, a well-known film director, made his debut in furniture design with his installation “A Thinking Room” at the Salone del Mobile fair in Milan. The installation, curated by Antonio Monda, aimed to create a unique experience for guests by offering them a journey into an alternate dimension of contemplation, transcending the typical furniture fair experience.
The installation features two identical spaces that mirror each other, providing a serene space amidst the bustling fair. Lynch’s distinct aesthetic is evident in the design, using a limited palette of “Lynchian colors” such as red, black, blue, and gold, reminiscent of artist James Lee Byars. Concealed behind a thick blue curtain, the interiors reveal Lynch’s passion for woodworking and furniture-making.
Although he collaborated with artists at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano for the physical creation of the pieces, Lynch’s signature symbolism permeates the space, from hidden motifs to meaningful objects like clocks and mirrors.
