For 60 years, Habitat has been committed to making good design accessible to everyone. Founded in the early ’60s, this British homeware retailer revolutionized the shopping experience with a “European way” of shopping for home goods, introducing unique objects that transformed ordinary living spaces into vibrant settings.
To mark this milestone anniversary, Habitat is showcasing its rich legacy with a new installation series at London’s Design Museum. The series, titled “Changing Spaces: 60 Years of Design with Habitat,” highlights decades of design movements and groundbreaking innovations through immersive displays and iconic homeware products.
The installation is divided into five sections spread throughout the museum, from the main atrium to the outside plaza. The series opens with the “Create” section, featuring an interactive activity inspired by Sivia Kamodyová’s hand-crafted Radica ceramic plates. Visitors can then explore Habitat’s history in the “Connect” section, leading to “Transform,” which focuses on the impact of lighting design.
Rest & Play at the Design Museum
Looking towards the future, the “Rest” and “Play” sections examine how Habitat’s designs continue to enhance contemporary living. “Rest” showcases soft furnishings and textiles, while “Play” offers interactive experiences with the new 60 Years of Design Collection.
For those passionate about homeware, the Design Museum and Habitat are hosting a special evening event as part of the Lates program. This event includes a private viewing of the exhibition and a panel discussion with Habitat’s in-house designers, recent collaborator Simone Brewster, and Hypebeast’s design editor.
