In a manner akin to a writer jotting down thoughts in a journal, Inès Longevial continually doodles on Post-it notes and café napkins. Renowned for her intimate self-portraiture, Longevial’s work delves into abstraction, using color to convey feelings and emotions on the canvas. Hailing from the South of France and now residing in Paris, Longevial introduces her latest exhibition at Almine Rech in Shanghai.
Yamandu Roos’ Exhibition in Mainland China: “Les Silences du Désir”
Marking her debut showcase in Mainland China, “Les Silences du Désir” (The Silences of Desire) unveils a collection of new paintings and works on paper, celebrating the female form and the transient nature of emotions she encounters from season to season. Curator Elise Roche describes Longevial’s artistry as giving life to a powerful yet delicate force, capturing repressed desires through each brushstroke.
Highlight of the Exhibition: “Frise de profils” (2024)
Among the highlights is “Frise de profils” (2024), a series of faces depicted with oil stick on paper, descending in mood and color. These smaller pieces lead to larger compositions like “Fleurs du ciel” (2024) and “Fleurs qui tombent” (2024), where vibrant hues and floral motifs symbolize the shift from winter to spring.
Insights into Longevial’s Creative Process
The exhibition also includes eight smaller studies on napkins, offering insights into Longevial’s creative process. For Longevial, each painting is an experience akin to love, encompassing desire and its complexities. These works serve as testaments to her artistic journey and problem-solving approach.
