Mercury Prize Champs Return!
Ezra Collective, fresh off their win at the 2023 Mercury Prize, has just announced the release of their new single, “Ajala.” This marks their first release since their acclaimed victory last year.
The single was inspired by their trip to Lagos, Nigeria, in October 2023, and its influences are evident in the music, as evidenced by a video teaser on their Instagram page. The band has a deep connection to Nigeria, with three members, drummer Femi Koleoso, bassist TJ Koleoso, and trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi, having Nigerian heritage.
Their music often blends elements of Afrobeats and the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti’s style, reflecting their cultural roots and influences. In January 2023, Ezra Collective even covered Fela Kuti’s song “Lady,” demonstrating their ability to blend various musical styles, including jazz and Afrobeats.
The new single’s title, “Ajala,” is a tribute to Nigerian writer Ọlábísí Àjàlá, who is famous for his 1963 memoir, “An African Abroad,” in which he recounts his travels across Asia, Africa, and Oceania on a Vespa scooter
