It was likely the first printing from 1958, published by Random House.
At the 64th annual ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair (NYIABF), the highlighted book is a first-edition copy of Truman Capote’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” This unique edition is handcrafted by English bookbinder Kate Holland and encrusted with 1,000 white diamonds, as a tribute to the centenary of Capote’s birth.
The book, published in 1958, is famously about New York socialite Holly Golightly. This edition features full photomontages by Davide Attie, which were considered too provocative at the time of the original publishing. This exquisite piece is encased in a goatskin cover and presented in a birdcage, symbolizing the thematic elements of the novella. Priced at USD 1.5 million, it’s a collector’s item to celebrate both the novel and the art of modern bookbinding.
The effort is led by Paul Suntup of Dragon Rebound, who specializes in custom bindings of first editions. His goal, along with Holland, is to showcase contemporary bookbinding as an art form worth collecting and enjoying, moving away from the traditional Victorian aesthetic commonly associated with the craft. The book will be displayed at the fair until April 7, giving attendees a chance to witness this blend of literary history and luxurious craftsmanship.
