From Retro to Refined: Sabine Marcelis’ Exquisite Lava Lamp Redesign

image

Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis has unveiled her second collaboration with Mathmos, reimagining the classic Astro Lava Lamp in a rich Bordeaux red hue. This limited-edition design marks a refined departure from the nostalgic original, transforming it into a sophisticated statement piece.

Marcelis’ signature minimalist approach is evident in the lamp’s hand-spun aluminum base and cap, which boast a deep red-purple finish. The frosted glass section adds a subtle, meditative quality, obscuring the flowing lava while maintaining a captivating visual effect.

The designer’s inspiration for the burgundy color scheme came from her installation at the VitraHaus loft in Germany, where she aimed to reimagine the space with her own designs. By reworking an iconic design, Marcelis demonstrates her ability to breathe new life into existing pieces, creating a fresh perspective on materiality and light dispersion.

This exclusive design will be limited to 1,000 editions, each individually numbered and available for purchase through the Mathmos website in October 2024. Sabine Marcelis’ refined take on the Lava Lamp solidifies her position as a master of elevating retro designs to new heights of sophistication.
