Ghost of Tsushima’s PC release has been a major success, marking PlayStation’s largest single-player game launch on Steam. Despite prior controversies, such as the Helldivers 2 PSN sign-up issue, Ghost of Tsushima has defied expectations, though some speculation remains about Sony’s cautious approach, which hasn’t fully shielded the game from early negative reviews.
Initially, Ghost of Tsushima faced negative reviews on Steam due to lingering discontent from the Helldivers 2 PSN sign-up controversy. However, as reported by Forbes, the reviews improved significantly over time.
The backlash began when Arrowhead Game Studios required Helldivers 2 PC players to link their PSN accounts to Steam, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and negative reviews. Sony eventually reversed this decision, responding to the negative publicity.
In contrast, Ghost of Tsushima’s PSN account requirement was communicated more transparently. Sucker Punch Productions clarified that linking a PSN account was only necessary for multiplayer co-op and the PlayStation overlay, allowing players to enjoy the single-player campaign without linking to PSN.
According to Steam DB data cited by GamesRadar, Ghost of Tsushima reached a peak concurrent player count of 77,500, surpassing titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War 2018, and The Last of Us Part 1. Despite this, Helldivers 2 remains Sony’s most successful PC game, with 12 million copies sold across PS5 and Steam within 12 weeks.
Nevertheless, Sony is likely pleased with Ghost of Tsushima’s PC launch, especially considering its initial release on PlayStation 4 in July 2020. This milestone showcases the game’s enduring popularity and success on a new platform.
