Honda HP-X Makes US Debut at Pebble Beach – A Glimpse into the NSX’s Legacy

The Honda HP-X Concept car, known for its striking and innovative design, will make its North American debut at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Unveiled at the 1984 Turin Auto Show, the HP-X symbolized Honda’s early aspirations to create a mid-engine supercar, a vision that was ultimately realized with the NSX.

The HP-X, a product of the esteemed Italian design firm Pininfarina, is distinguished by its bold wedge shape and a cockpit inspired by military aircraft. This appearance at Pebble Beach marks the first time in over 50 years that a Japanese vehicle has been featured at this prestigious event.

Dave Marek, Acura’s design executive and a guest judge at the Concours, commented, “The Honda HP-X Concept was the standout of the 1984 Turin Auto Show. Its groundbreaking design and engineering excellence continue to influence car designers and engineers today.”

Notable for its advanced aerodynamic features, the HP-X includes ground effects and innovative cooling systems for its mid-mounted 2.0L DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, which is based on Honda’s F2 racing engine. The concept’s futuristic aesthetics are further enhanced by its jet-fighter-style single-piece Perspex canopy and the use of cutting-edge materials such as honeycomb panels, carbon fiber, and Kevlar.

The interior of the HP-X showcases pioneering technology with its “Electronic Drive Support System,” which introduced real-time telemetry, GPS, and road condition warnings ahead of its time.

Felix Kilbertus, Pininfarina’s chief creative officer, remarked, “The HP-X exemplifies the innovative spirit of both Honda and Pininfarina. Its influence on future Honda models and the broader automotive landscape is profound.”

After an extensive restoration at Pininfarina’s Italian workshop, the HP-X will compete in the “Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars and Prototypes” category at the 73rd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18, 2024.
