Is VF Corporation Ready to Part Ways with Supreme?

image

Rumors swirl as reports emerge that Supreme could be on the verge of parting ways with VF Corporation, its parent company. According to recent coverage by WWD, VF Corp, the conglomerate that acquired Supreme for a hefty $1.2 billion in 2020, is now exploring options to offload the renowned streetwear label, potentially signaling a significant shift in the fashion landscape.

The move comes as VF Corporation undertakes a broader review of its portfolio, with Goldman Sachs enlisted to assess its holdings. While VF Corp has expressed a desire to streamline its assets, the decision to potentially divest Supreme was not explicitly targeted until now. In response to the speculation, a spokesperson for VF Corp remained tight-lipped, stating, “As a matter of policy, we don’t comment on market rumors or speculation,” while Goldman Sachs declined to provide any further details at this stage.

Supreme’s trajectory has been closely monitored by industry insiders and fashion enthusiasts alike. Once valued at $1 billion when private equity firm Carlyle invested in 2017, Supreme’s allure seemed boundless, with expectations of even greater growth following the VF Corp acquisition. However, recent years have seen the brand face challenges and scrutiny, with concerns ranging from supply chain issues to controversies surrounding its creative direction.

Despite these setbacks, Supreme has continued to expand its global footprint, with recent store openings in key markets like Seoul and Shanghai. Meanwhile, VF Corp, boasting annual sales nearing $11 billion, remains a powerhouse in the fashion industry. Alongside Supreme, its portfolio includes renowned brands such as Vans, Timberland, The North Face, and more. With new CEO Bracken Darrell at the helm, VF Corp has signaled a commitment to refining its portfolio to align with its strategic vision for the future.

As speculation mounts and industry observers speculate on potential outcomes, the fate of Supreme hangs in the balance. Will it remain under the VF Corp umbrella, or will it find a new home? Stay tuned as developments unfold, and the fashion world awaits the next chapter in Supreme’s storied legacy.
