The world-renowned visionary behind KAPITAL, Toshikiyo Hirata, has passed away, as reported by global news outlets today.
Hirata-san established the Japanese denim label in 1948 while residing in the United States, where he taught karate. Influenced by the American denim aesthetic, his brand’s ethos reflected this inspiration, shaping its identity. Amidst the complex historical backdrop between America and Japan, Hirata joined an early cohort of Japanese collectors who journeyed to America in pursuit of vintage denim treasures. Upon returning home, he delved into denim production, studying techniques in Kojima during the ’80s.
In 1984, he established his denim factory, laying the foundation for the birth of KAPITAL. Though he never imagined himself as a fashion designer, Hirata’s keen eye for detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship defined the brand’s identity. Today, KAPITAL is a global fashion icon, leaving an indelible mark on the streetwear landscape. His son, Kiro, has played a pivotal role in expanding the brand’s legacy.
