Earlier this spring, Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA) completed an innovative co-working space and cafe in Kibichuo, titled Kibi Kogen N Square. Situated in the heart of the Okayama Prefecture, this region in western Japan is renowned for its blend of historic charm and natural beauty.
The 585-square-meter, two-story building is constructed entirely with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, a fitting choice given that Okayama is the largest producer of CLT panels in Japan. This connection adds a deeper significance to the structure.
KKAA’s design features CLT panels stacked at various angles, creating unique spaces and openings that emphasize “angular misalignment.” This design choice fosters a sense of openness, allowing natural sunlight to illuminate the interior through skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. At night, the ceiling fixtures emit a warm glow, enhancing the harmonious ambiance of the wooden structure.
Kibi Kogen N Square represents a departure from typical CLT-heavy designs, which often appear closed-off and uninspiring. An official statement from KKAA emphasizes that this building embodies the spirit of openness and collaboration. The facility includes participation from local institutions like Okayama University, fostering a blend of activities that bridge generations and industry-academia boundaries.
Kibi Kogen N Square not only serves as a functional co-working space but also as a symbol of community and innovation, inviting locals and visitors alike to experience a new approach to collaborative work environments.
