Renowned architect and designer Mies van der Rohe was celebrated for his remarkable ability to refine furniture forms, achieving an elegant balance between minimalism and warmth. Among his many distinguished designs, the Tugendhat Chair stands out as a prime example of his expertise. Knoll has now reissued this iconic piece, first created in 1929 alongside the Barcelona Chair.
Tugendhat Chair Reissue: A Design Classic Returns
The Tugendhat Chair is noted for its thick, untufted seat, which provides exceptional comfort, and optional armrests for added support. Its cantilevered steel frame allows for effortless movement and flexibility, while the leather straps forming the back not only contribute to its distinctive aesthetic but also enhance seating comfort. “The chair offers a gentle bounce, which adds a dynamic quality to the design,” remarked Jonathan Olivares, Knoll’s Senior Vice President of Design. “It engages the user and influences the spatial experience of the entire interior.”
Celebrating Iconic Furniture: Knoll’s Tribute to Mies van der Rohe
To commemorate the chair’s reissue and celebrate Mies van der Rohe’s design legacy, Knoll visited the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic—the original site for which the Tugendhat Chair was designed. The Villa, created by van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the campaign imagery underscores the chair’s connection to art, design, and architecture.
Modernist Design: Tugendhat Chair Now Available
The Tugendhat Chair is now available in a variety of materials and finishes through the Knoll webstore, with prices ranging from $5,195 to $7,695 USD.
