Los Angeles-based artist Lauren Halsey has unveiled the first renderings of her upcoming sculpture park in her hometown of South Central LA. This exciting new project is reminiscent of her monumental rooftop installation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year.
Lauren Halsey Debuts Temporary Sculpture Park Celebrating South Central LA
Titled **“sister dreamer, lauren halsey’s architectural ode to tha surge n splurge of south central los angeles,”** The temporary sculpture park is curated by Christine Y. Kim, co-founder of the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), and is supported by the Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project. From afar, the park appears to transport visitors back to Ancient Egypt, featuring eight sphinxes and eight totemic columns adorned with the head of the Egyptian goddess of beauty, Hathor.
Recontextualizing Antiquity: Lauren Halsey’s Tribute to Black Culture in LA
Up close, however, Halsey recontextualizes these grandiose elements by focusing on Black culture in LA. She highlights community leaders and motivational phrases, redefining the narrative of antiquity to celebrate contemporary Black excellence. Describing the park as “a living expression of the dynamic power of community,” Halsey aims to inspire liberation, self-definition, community building, and economic autonomy. The sculpture park is set to open to the public in spring 2026.
