In a groundbreaking solo exhibition at Portland’s Blue Sky Gallery, Nigerian-American artist Mikael Owunna delves into the uncharted territories of ultraviolet light to bring ancient African folklore to life. “Imagine Fresh Darkness” presents a stunning series of photographs, “Infinite Essence,” that challenges our conventional understanding of darkness and light.
Through fluorescent light, Owunna’s nude portraits of painted bodies radiate an otherworldly glow, revealing the Black body as a canvas of luminous potential. This innovative approach draws upon the essence of invisibility and blackness, transcending the boundaries of the visible spectrum.
The exhibition also features an experimental dance film, “Obi Mbu (The Primordial House),” co-directed by Owunna and Marques Redd. This mesmerizing piece brings to life the Igbo gods, Eke-Nnechukwu and Chukwu, in a sacred dance that embodies the world’s genesis and current state.
“Imagine Fresh Darkness” is a profound exploration of the unseen, a testament to the power of art to illuminate the hidden narratives and energies surrounding us. On view until June 29, 2024, this exhibition is a must-see for anyone seeking to experience the magic beyond the visible realm.
