Science SARU and Production I.G. have officially revealed the development of a new *Ghost in the Shell* anime. According to Gizmodo, the upcoming series has a working title of *The Ghost in the Shell* and is set to premiere in 2026.
This new anime marks the franchise’s first addition since 2020’s Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, which was part of the Stand Alone Complex universe. The Netflix series, which consisted of two seasons, received mainly negative reviews.
Originally published as a seinen manga by Masamune Shirow in 1989, Ghost in the Shell focuses on Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorism organization led by Major Motoko Kusanagi. The franchise has since expanded to include four additional mangas, five animated films, a live-action movie starring Scarlett Johansson, and four animated series.
