Nina Davies’ ‘Becoming the Edit’: A Thought-Provoking Exploration of Humanity’s Tenuous Relationship with Technology

image

In the heart of East London, Seventeen Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by the talented British-Canadian artist Nina Davies. “Becoming the Edit” is a thought-provoking showcase that delves into the intricate relationship between humanity and technology, leveraging a diverse range of media, including audio, sculpture, film, and installation.

The exhibition couldn’t be more aptly timed, as our ability to immerse ourselves in the digital world has become increasingly seamless. At the centerpiece of the show lies “Haters will say I’m real” (2024), a captivating nine-minute video that transports viewers to a fictional near-future. Two unseen speakers engage in a discourse on the evolving legal system and its far-reaching ethical implications on image rights. The performers’ choreographed movements, twirling their phones around their bodies in a series of “edits,” serve as a poignant commentary on our offline and online interactions.

Surrounding the space is “Bystander Assembly” (2024), a series of commercially available objects that monitor visitors’ movements, shedding light on the pervasive surveillance systems that track our physical and online activities. This immersive installation prompts us to contemplate the consequences of our actions in the digital realm.

According to Seventeen Gallery, “Nina’s practice is characterized by her examination of friction where technology and its users interact, notably the user’s relationship with data and their image, all with a particular and unique focus on movement and dance.” Her use of speculative fiction invites viewers to envision a hypothetical near future, where we can reflect on the ramifications of the systems we are collectively fueling and building today.

The exhibition will be on view until July 6, 2024, and is complemented by a series of live performances at 2:30 pm daily, which expand on the themes and objects presented in the show.
