Reimagining Interaction: Sofia Elias’ Playground Redefines the Frontiers of Object and User
Sofia Elias, a multidisciplinary artist and architect, has brought her innovative outdoor playground experience, “Playing to Play” (originally titled “Jugando a Jugar” in Spanish), to New York City’s High Line Plaza. This latest installation embodies her long-held vision of crafting a “playful universe,” which was first conceived during her college years and further explored in her university thesis.
Carefully designed and constructed to accommodate the park’s unique topography, the playground offers a free and interactive space that encourages children to explore and play with the installed pieces in unconventional ways. By breaking free from traditional notions of play, Elias’ design unlocks diverse possibilities for interaction, fostering creativity and imagination in young minds.
Elias’ design philosophy is deeply rooted in her creative process, emphasizing the importance of hands-on experimentation and material exploration. “My designs come out of my need to play, experiment with material, and create with my own hands,” she explains. This approach allows her to continually discover new textures, shapes, and expressions, ultimately informing her innovative designs.
The “Playing to Play” playground is now open to the public near the High Line Plaza at The Standard, New York City, until September 9. This unique playground experience is a must-visit for anyone interested in reimagining the boundaries of play and interaction.
