Instagram’s Reels, launched in 2020 as a competitor to TikTok, was inundated with aggregated content, a trend it hadn’t anticipated. With larger accounts and meme pages often reposting videos without crediting the original creators, Instagram’s algorithmic overhaul aims to address this issue.
CEO Adam Mosseri shared the news through a video on his account, outlining the changes. The updated algorithm will automatically replace reposted content in the “recommended” Reels section with the original video, ensuring proper credit. While the aggregated content won’t be removed from the poster’s account, it will be labeled to link back to the original creator and be visible to all viewers.
Furthermore, Instagram will reduce recommendations for aggregators, especially those with a history of posting unoriginal content. However, users who frequently “Remix” Reels, similar to “duetting” on TikTok, are unlikely to be affected unless they fail to enhance the content.
Although Mosseri clarified that the feature will not take immediate effect, it will be gradually rolled out over the coming months. This update aims to foster a more equitable environment for original creators on Instagram’s Reels platform.
