Sari Sari: Where SoCal’s Chill Meets the Philippines’ Vibrancy in Perfect Harmony

image

In the heart of Ventura, California, a city renowned for its surf culture and laid-back atmosphere, Indoek studio and gallery is bridging the gap between art and community. Co-founded by Matt Titone and Ron Thompson, Indoek has established itself as a hub for creative expression, publishing, and exhibitions. Their latest showcase, ‘Sari Sari,’ features the vibrant works of Filipino-American artist D.J. Javier, celebrating the convergence of diverse cultures and hybrid identities.

‘Sari Sari,’ meaning “variety” in Tagalog, pays homage to the eclectic bodegas found in the Philippines, where daily essentials and treasures coexist. Javier’s artistic style blends graphic lettering, characters, and iconography inspired by his Southern California upbringing and Filipino heritage. The exhibition is a kaleidoscope of color and energy, with standouts like the multi-media installation ‘Sari Sari’ and the acrylic-painted sculpture ‘People Studies No. 1 (2024).’

Indoek describes ‘Sari Sari’ as a celebration of the rich narratives that emerge when cultures intersect. Through Javier’s art, viewers are invited to explore a world where heritage and contemporary culture thrive in harmony. The exhibition will be on view at Indoek’s Ventura studio until July 14, 2024, offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of cultural fusion.

Visit Indoek at 432 N Ventura Ave, Studio 30, Ventura, CA 93001, and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of ‘Sari Sari.’
