Thom Browne’s Fall 2024 Couture show debuted with an almost entirely white and cream collection, featuring looks crafted from muslin, a fabric typically used for garment mockups. With the Paris Olympics just a month away, the house paid homage to the historic games in a way only Thom Browne could pull off.
The show opened with dramatic, excessively layered looks, rich in textures and silhouettes. These designs, reminiscent of suits—a Thom Browne staple—included a gown paired with an oversized, voluminous blazer and a suit that played with cutouts and proportions, blurring the line between a suit and a dress. Models were adorned with embroidery samplers fashioned as masks or headpieces.
As the show progressed, sporty silhouettes like shorts and pleated tennis skirts became more prominent, mingled with dramatic gowns. Models wore lace-up track heels and boots, and carried little dog purses, incorporating the athletic theme through intricate details.
Sequins and bugle beads embroidered with Grecian figures added a special flair to the garments, each featuring a different Olympic athlete, such as an archer, javelinist, discus thrower, wrestler, and weightlifter. One standout look took the theme of “pulling back the curtain” literally, revealing detailed embroidered anatomy with each essential muscle defined on one side of a trench coat.
The show culminated in a tribute to the ultimate Olympic achievement—the gold medal. An elaborate gown filled with florals and a large, swooping collar resembling a victor’s bouquet graced the runway, followed by three models showcasing intricate sportscoats in bronze, silver, and gold, representing the Olympic placements.
