Tokyo Gendai Art Fair Moves to September for 2025 Edition

Tokyo Gendai has announced a shift in dates for its upcoming 2025 edition. Breaking away from its traditional July schedule, the art fair will now take place from September 12 to September 14 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center, with a VIP preview day on September 11.

A VIP email sent out on July 10 highlighted that the new fall dates would offer a more comfortable climate for visitors and galleries. Co-founder Magnus Renfew explained to ARTnews editor-in-chief Sarah Douglas that the hot and humid July weather in Tokyo has been a challenge, making it difficult to attract more American and European visitors. Additionally, this year’s fair coincided with the sixth edition of Monaco Art Week.

The second edition of Tokyo Gendai attracted prominent collectors such as Takeo Obayashi, Shunji and Asako Oketa, Yoshiko Mori, Jenny Wang, and Simian Wang during VIP day. The event also saw robust sales for galleries like Pace Gallery and BLUM, both of which have branches in Tokyo. Visitors from over 40 countries attended to explore offerings from 69 galleries.

Tokyo Gendai is part of the Art Assembly’s group of fairs in the Asia Pacific region, which also includes ART SG in Singapore in January and Taipei Dangdai in Taipei, Taiwan in May. This year’s edition of Tokyo Gendai received support from the Japan Tourism Agency, Agency for Cultural Affairs Government of Japan, City of Yokohama Sports and Culture, and the Dynamic City Development.

Stay tuned for more updates as Tokyo Gendai prepares to welcome art enthusiasts to its 2025 edition in a more visitor-friendly season!
