Imagine a gallery wall adorned with captivating paintings, but instead of landscapes or portraits, these artworks capture the essence of thrilling game
American artist Tyrrell Winston debuts his latest solo exhibition, “Mr. Irrelevant,” at Detroit’s Louis Buhl & Co., marking a return to his collaboration with the gallery.
Departing from his signature basketball sculptures and “Punishment Paintings,” Winston shifts focus to the essence of sports: the score. In “Box Score,” inspired by On Kawara’s Date Paintings, Winston portrays final scores from recent NFL playoffs and the 2024 March Madness, with background colors indicating the winners.
Complementing “Box Score” are Winston’s pencil and watercolor drawings featuring club logos and thoughts, sketched on everyday items like hotel stationary and McDonald’s wrappers, each encased like sports trading cards. “Mr. Irrelevant” runs until May 29, offering Detroit audiences a unique perspective on the intersection of sports and art.
Visit Louis Buhl & Co. at 1260 Library Street Alley, Detroit, MI 48226 to experience Winston’s innovative take on sports aesthetics and cultural commentary firsthand.
