Yayoi Kusama’s Mesmerizing Installation Finds a New Home at SFMOMA

In a significant acquisition, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has added Yayoi Kusama’s mesmerizing “Infinity Mirror Room” installation, “Dreaming of Earth’s Sphericity, I Would Offer My Love” (2023), to its permanent collection. This immersive artwork, characterized by its infinite reflections and dazzling lights, has captivated audiences worldwide, including over 170,000 visitors at SFMOMA’s recent “Infinite Love” exhibition.

The acquisition is accompanied by a poignant apology from Kusama, addressing her past anti-Black statements in her 2003 autobiography. With a deep sense of regret, she reaffirms her artistic mission of spreading love, hope, and compassion, acknowledging the pain caused by her words.

SFMOMA’s latest acquisition is part of a larger effort to diversify its collection, with over 60 new works by artists such as Amy Sherald, Rafa Esparza, Oscar Murillo, and Virgil Abloh, among others. This expansion embodies the museum’s vision to showcase a wide range of artistic perspectives, experimental forms, and socially engaged themes.

As “Dreaming of Earth’s Sphericity, I Would Offer My Love” opens to the public on Saturday, SFMOMA solidifies its commitment to presenting boundary-pushing art that inspires and challenges audiences. Kusama’s installation will remain on view until January next year, offering a unique experience that will leave a lasting impact on all who enter its shimmering realm.
